Thank you so much for your generous cheque.  It's great that you refuse to be pressured by the ridiculously stringent gift-giving rules of etiquette.

Despite our intimate family connection, I would hate for you to put yourself to the trouble of hunting down and purchasing a more personal gift.  I regret that I was unable not to 'spend it all at once', as by the time I had purchased this thank you card, there was only just enough money left for the bus fare home.
